The City of Springfield, in the heart of the Southern Willamette Valley, is a great place to live, work and play. Springfield is known in the past as a “Timber Town”, is emerging as a leader while diversifying its population. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist various departments with a variety of activities and value added services.

The City of Springfield’s Volunteer and Internship Program partners citizens and City departments to provide valuable services to the Citizens of Springfield. The City of Springfield works to accommodate internships in conjunction with our Volunteer program. 

We are constantly recruiting Volunteers to perform a wide variety of tasks.  If you want to be involved in your community consider volunteering a few hours of your time.

Process for becoming a volunteer.

Those interested in Volunteering for the City of Springfield are encouraged to fill out an application, mail or drop it by City Hall, Human Resources – Volunteer Coordinator.  If you have questions feel free to contact us at volunteer@springfield-or.gov or call the Volunteer Department at 541-726-4652.

 

Requirements and Applications

We are looking for volunteers who have good people skills and enjoy giving back to their community. A positive attitude and sense of humor are must. Most of our volunteers are 16 years of age and older, but at times we need young and enthusiastic volunteers 13 to 16 years of age. There is no upper age limit to volunteer. We appreciate and learn daily from those who have a wealth of life skills, knowledge, professional experience and tested maturity.  All of our volunteers must pass a background check and have no felony convictions. 

The amount of time required for each volunteer opportunity varies depending on the position. Please check each assignment description for specifics. Each volunteer opportunity will detail out the expectations and task requirements. Contact our volunteer coordinator at  volunteer@springfield-or.gov with questions.

Many of our volunteer opportunities are for individuals but we have a multitude of group opportunities as well. If you have a group or organization that is interested in contributing time on a project in the community, please contact our volunteer coordinator at:

Administrative services

General office clerks perform a variety of administrative tasks, including answering and making calls, typing or word processing, utilizing knowledge of computer literacy and Microsoft Office programs, making copies, and maintaining records. If you are interested in gaining more experience and skills, here are the fields where we need you!

Development & Public Works

 

The Development and Public Works Department provides a variety of volunteering opportunities.  Applications are currently being accepted for our Clean Water University program.

This program works directly teaching 5th grade Springfield students.

Information Kiosk: City Hall and Justice Center

Looking to Volunteer where you can reach out and help people every day?  Our Information Kiosks are for you.  We staff the Kiosk from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday in 4.5 hours blocks of time, two people to a shift.  Your responsibilities include greeting and helping people locate offices in City Hall and/or help determine which department can best assist them. A phone may ring once in a while also.  It’s that simple.  If you love to meet and greet people… enjoy helping people and want to serve your community…our City Hall Information Kiosk is for you.  Minimum Requirements are: you must be able to volunteer at least 4.5 hours a week, every other week for 6 months.

Library

Library volunteers provide a wide network of support in all areas of the library.  Primarily, the library volunteers assist in re-shelving returned materials. These include books, magazines, audio books, and movies.  Other opportunities include helping in book mending, book jacketing, and withdrawing library materials. 

Occasionally there are opportunities for volunteers in assisting the youth librarians to prepare crafts for story times and other children’s programs and to assist the adult librarians in cleaning the public computers.

Additional opportunities to volunteer in support of the Library Department include serving on the Arts Commission, Library Board, Friends of the Library, the Library Foundation, and TAB (Teen Advisory Board). 

Library volunteers are placed in positions which benefit both the volunteer and the Library in a wide network of support.

Photographer

We need team members who will professionally and artistically capture the many facets of the City of Springfield and Springfield Police Department, its employees, volunteers and the community that we serve. We are looking for photographers that can serve as archivists for historical purposes as well as provide photographs that can be displayed and utilized for advertising, promotional and public displays.

  • Work with the many departments and events within the City of Springfield.
  • Photograph special events, training, and community relation opportunities.
  • Other projects as they arise or as volunteer interest directs.

Springfield Police Department

Springfield Police Department, known for “Catching the Bad Guy,” has a Volunteer program that is top notch.  Team SPD volunteers are a dedicated team of citizen volunteers who generously share our time and talents in a variety of positions.  Volunteers are able to work side by side with Officers and support staff delivering outstanding services to the citizens of Springfield. Volunteer Patrol and Fleet volunteers  are an extra set of eyes and ears for your community. 

 

SPD Volunteer team is made up of citizens who want to support their police department, students who need to earn school credit, part-time and full-time employees, retirees, and stay at home citizens.  Our Volunteer team also includes those interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement as well as Citizen Police Academy graduates.

Internships


We offer a variety of unpaid internship which provide academic credits. Include your resume, a cover letter, with your application. Please apply by the deadlines listed in the position announcements below.
