Neighborhood Watch: The benefits of organizing and participating in the Neighborhood
Watch (NW) program translates into a higher quality of life.
The program establishes a team concept of working together and looking
out for one another. NW groups forge partnerships with the
Police Department to create strong neighborhoods better to resist
criminal activity.
To organize a Neighborhood Watch Group:
Volunteering: Citizen
volunteers participate in several programs in the department.
Office volunteers provide support by gathering and making copies
of information, preparing materials for mailing to the community,
and performing general office work.
Reserve Officer Program:
This program consists of citizen volunteers who receive police academy
training and in-service training similar to that of a regular police
officer. Their participation in department activities allows
them to view the law enforcement profession up close and perhaps
decide to join the profession. Reserves augment the department's
ability to provide police services to the community, such as crowd
and traffic control at planned and unplanned events. In addition,
they assist in the security of crime scenes and major traffic accidents.
Lock Out Crime Project:
This project provides free home security inspections for citizens
of Springfield. Also, available through this program is lock
installation for low income residents. Information about the
program and appointments for inspections can be made by calling
the Crime Prevention Unit (541)726-2323.
Ride Along Program: Through
this program citizens are allowed to accompany a uniformed police
officer during his/her shift. This enables the public to see
up close the duties and functions preformed by our department.
If interested in a Ride Along, please contact (541)726-3714 or stop
by and pick up a form.
