GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of a division manager or supervisor, researches, plans and designs improvements or develops new programs in traffic engineering, lighting, signing, striping and related traffic functions. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

1. Performs complex traffic engineering assignments using professional techniques and principles.

2. Collects and analyzes field information to include traffic counts and accident data; may provide technical and functional supervision on special projects and assignments to include traffic signal projects.

3. Provides technical supervision and direction of field personnel in the installation of traffic control devices.

4. Designs and prepares plans and specifications for improvements that include traffic signals, general street changes, and various other traffic safety modifications.

5. Reviews and evaluates various land use and land development proposals with respect to geometric design, circulation, traffic controls and impacts on adjacent streets.

6. Serves as department liaison to neighborhood groups and City committees, commissions and boards as required; works with other agencies and the public to provide information and technical assistance.

7. Prepares the more difficult technical reports and correspondence; utilizes a CAD program to process data.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of transportation and traffic engineering principles in all phases of data research and collection; knowledge of the principles of work scheduling and coordination; knowledge of technical report preparation methods; knowledge of public works plans and specifications; knowledge of drafting techniques; ability to provide technical and functional supervi-sion for co-workers; ability to prepare comprehensive technical reports and improvement plans; ability to perform engineering design work; ability to coordinate and schedule work assignments and projects; ability to interpret and work from plans, diagrams, sketches and specifications; ability to interact harmoniously with employees, officials and the general public; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to use a CAD system to process data.

Experience and Training

Two years of college with major coursework in traffic engineering, transportation planning, or a related field, and four years of experience in municipal or traffic engineering or transportation planning. Additional education may be substituted for up to half of the required experience, or any combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications

An Oregon driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
