TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Traffic Maintenance Supervisor, maintains and repairs traffic signals and related equipment. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

1. Installs, repairs, or replaces traffic control equipment as needed.

2. Inspects new traffic signal installations for compliance with construction plans and specifications, to exclude electrical circuitry; monitors work performed by contractors.

3. Maintains all field components in the signal systems, to include: painting of controller cabinets, poles, and signals to resist weathering; relamping signals every year, or as required to insure proper luminance; and verifying the operational status of the fire pre-emption equipment.

4. Performs monthly inspections of the traffic signal systems and performs appropriate tests to insure error-free operations.

5. Completes, and updates, detailed and accurate traffic signal maintenance records.

6. Participates in sign maintenance, striping, barricade maintenance, and removal of visual obstructions, as needed.

7. Responds to emergency signal malfunctions, and citizens' service requests and inquiries regarding traffic signals.

8. May participate in the training and orientation of new unit employees.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of standard electrical and electronic traffic signal systems, practices, tools, materials and equipment; knowledge of the operation of an aerial lift truck and related equipment; knowledge of electric motors and control systems that is sufficient to perform the duties of the position; knowledge of safe working practices; knowledge of recordkeeping techniques and guidelines; knowledge of computer systems as they relate to the duties of the position; ability to learn the traffic signal maintenance and repair procedures that are unique to this organization; ability to adhere to the limits imposed by the Limited Maintenance Specialty Contractor's License and unit SOPPs; ability to complete work within established deadlines; ability to use tools and equipment correctly and safely, to include the aerial lift truck; ability to read and understand traffic signal plans and specifications; ability to participate in, and contribute to, the citywide preventive maintenance program; ability to communicate effectively, and follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare accurate, timely reports of work activities; ability to work comfortably and safely at varying heights; ability to learn computer applications that are found in traffic signal operations; ability to establish and maintain good working relations with co-workers, contractors, and the general public.

Experience and Training

One year of experience in traffic signal maintenance and repair that included the installation and repair of various types of traffic signal control systems, such as electromechanical, or type 170 controller, or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of a State of Oregon Limited Maintenance Specialty Contractor's License--Individual, or the ability to obtain within twelve months of appointment.

Possession of an IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I certificate, or the ability to obtain within twelve months of appointment.

Possession of a Class B Oregon Commercial Driver's License at the time of appointment.
