TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN TRAINEE

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Traffic Maintenance Supervisor, and the lead-work direction of the Traffic Signal Electrician, maintains and repairs traffic signals and related equipment. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

1. Participates in the installation, repair, or replacement of traffic control equipment as needed.

2. Assists in the inspection of new traffic signal installations for compliance with construction plans and specifications, to exclude electrical circuitry.

3. Maintains all field components in the signal systems, to include: painting of controller cabinets, poles, and signals to resist weathering; relamping signals every year, or as required to insure proper luminance; and verifying the operational status of the fire preemption equipment.

4. Performs monthly inspections of the traffic signal systems and performs appropriate tests to insure error-free operations.

5. Provides information that contributes to detailed and accurate traffic signal maintenance records and activity reports.

6. Participates in sign maintenance, striping, barricade maintenance, and removal of visual obstructions, as needed.

7. Responds to emergency signal malfunctions, and citizens' service requests and inquiries regarding traffic signals.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of public works maintenance operations; knowledge of the role that traffic signals and related equipment play in public works operations; knowledge of safe working practices; knowledge of recordkeeping techniques and guidelines; knowledge of computer capabilities as they relate to public works maintenance; ability to learn the traffic signal maintenance and repair procedures; ability to complete work within established deadlines; ability to use tools and equipment correctly and safely, to include the aerial lift truck; ability to learn to read and understand traffic signal plans and specifications; ability to participate in, and contribute to, the citywide preventive maintenance program; ability to communicate effectively, and follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare accurate, timely reports of work activities; ability to work comfortably and safely at varying heights; ability to learn computer applications that are found in traffic signal operations; ability to establish and maintain good working relations with co-workers, contractors, and the general public.

Experience and Training

Two years of experience in a public works maintenance capacity, and successful participation in a State-approved Maintenance Apprentice training program.

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of a State of Oregon Limited Maintenance Specialty Contractor's License--Individual, or the ability to obtain within twelve months of appointment.

Possession of an IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I certificate, or the ability to obtain within twelve months of appointment.

Possession of a Class B Oregon Commercial Driver's license at the time of appointment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

After successful completion of a 12 month training program in traffic signal repair and maintenance, the trainee will be promoted to Traffic Signal Technician.
