                                                         General Summary of Duties

Participates in the installation, repair and maintenance of traffic control devices, signs, pavement marking, and striping; provides signal maintenance support.  Performs related duties as required.

 

 

                                                       Distinguishing Characteristics

This position combines traffic related maintenance activities with signal maintenance functions.  Because incumbents are required to have completed the state-approved Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship, the position provides internal career advancement opportunity.  It is distinguished from the Maintenance Technician Journey position because of its specialization in traffic maintenance and control operations and required successful participation in the LME (Limited Maintenance Electrician) program.  It is distinguished from the Traffic Maintenance Technician in that the latter position requires one year as a Traffic Maintenance Technician Trainee and successful participation in the LME program.

 

 

Supervision Received and Exercised:  Under supervision of Maintenance Supervisor and lead work direction of the Senior Traffic Signal Electrician

             

 

     Essential Job Functions: Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks, which may be found in positions of this class. 

·        Participates as a team member for the maintenance and repair of traffic control devices including; signals, signs, pavement markings, and striping;

·        Fabricates and erects signs including: regulatory, warning, guide, street name, and other signs as needed;

·        Installs, maintains, and removes pavement markings an striping;

·        Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic signals;

·        Collects and contributes detailed and accurate information about signs, signals, and pavement markings for maintenance records;

·        Responds to emergency calls and citizen service requests related to signs, signals, and pavement markings;

·        May assist other Maintenance Division crews in various projects, as necessary;

·        May participate in the training and orientation of new unit employees;

·        Performs other related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

 

 

                                                                    Qualifications

Knowledge of:

·        Public works maintenance operations; 

·        Sign fabrication equipment, maintenance tools, and procedures;

·        Pavement marking equipment and maintenance procedures;

·        The role that traffic signals and related equipment play in public works operations;

·        Safe working practices;

·        Record keeping techniques and guidelines;

·        Computer capabilities as they relate to public works maintenance

 

Ability to:

·        Learn traffic signal maintenance and repair procedures;

·        Complete work within established deadlines;

·        Use tools and equipment correctly and safely, to include the aerial lift truck;

·        Learn to read and understand traffic signal plans and specification;

·        Participate in and contribute to the city’s infrastructure maintenance program;

·        Follow oral and written instructions;

·        Communicate effectively;

·        Ability to prepare accurate, timely reports of work activities;

·        Learn computer applications that are found in traffic signal operations;

·        Work comfortably and safely at varying heights;

·        Establish and maintain good working relations with co-workers, contractors, and general public;

·        Learn electrical theory and circuitry, as it exits within the scope of the position;

 

Experience and Training: 

 

Training: 

Successful completion of the State-approved Maintenance Technician apprenticeship which typically takes three years to complete and

 

Experience: 

And one year of work experience in traffic maintenance and control operations to include pavement markings, sign fabrication and installation, and the use of specialized traffic maintenance equipment and procedures or any equivalent combination of experience, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities, required to perform the job.

 

 

                                                      Required Special Qualifications

·        Valid Class B Oregon Commercial Driver’s license at the time of appointment;

·        IMSA Sign and Pavement Marking Level 1 Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 24 months of appointment

 

 

Special Conditions:

To qualify for classification as a Traffic Maintenance Technician Trainee, the employee must be enrolled in the Limited Maintenance Electrician (LME) program. Upon registration the employee will be reclassified to a Traffic Maintenance Technician Trainee.  After successful completion of 12 months as a Traffic Maintenance Technician Trainee, the Trainee will be reclassified to Traffic Maintenance Technician.

 

 

                                                               Working Conditions

Work in this class is typically performed in a field environment. Incumbent is typically required to work outdoors in all weather conditions; to lift up to 80 pounds; to work in and around traffic, work site equipment or machinery; to work at heights; to be exposed to hazardous materials, to wear protective gear; to be called back to work during emergencies.
