                                                         General Summary of Duties

Under the general supervision of the City Surveyor, conducts surveys for rights-of-way, easements, mapping and construction work, and public works projects and improvements. Performs related duties as required.

 

 

                                                       Distinguishing Characteristics

The Survey Party Chief classification is distinguished from the Engineering Tech 3 in that it is primarily responsible for the survey function and that the positions below it are more engineering focused.  The Survey Party Chief requires more experience in surveying and is required to conduct duties with little to no supervision.  The Surveyor classification is distinguished from this one in that the Surveyor has license requirements and incumbents certify their work.  All other relevant positions lateral to this one are primarily engineering focused.

 

 

Supervision Received and Exercised: 

Reports to City Surveyor.  Does not Supervise.  May act in lead capacity depending on project assignment.  This position will primarily work unsupervised and is required to maintain a high degree of accuracy and professionalism without much direct field supervision.

             

 

Essential Job Functions: Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks, which may be found in positions of this class.

·         Locates rights-of-way and easements for street construction staking, Maintenance Division projects, and marking locations, by using total stations, construction drawings, and legal descriptions.

·         Establishes horizontal and vertical control for construction projects, mapping of municipal projects, GIS applications, and checking plat subdivisions; enters GIS information into data base, and other

·         survey data into field books or maps and drawings.

·         Completes topographic surveys to gather information for Public Works engineers; uses total station and data collector to measure and record topographic information; loads survey data into the computer for analysis and processing.

·         Compiles, records, and maintains survey notes using field books, and/or data collectors; may update construction notes.

·         Maintains and updates reference maps, document filing systems, and GIS survey control data, using reference books, PCs, legal information, and field data.

·         Provides information from reference notes and field books to co-workers, the public, and representatives from other government agencies and utility companies.

·         Performs field check on partition and subdivision Plats and ties to City survey control.

·         Check as-built construction plans and ties to City survey control for GIS utilization.

·         May provide lead direction for members of the survey crew; trains new employees, and assign and reviews work depending on assigned projects.

 

 

                                                                    Qualifications

Knowledge:

·         Knowledge of surveying principles and practices;

·         Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as they are found in engineering operations;

·         Knowledge of deeds and legal descriptions as they relate to surveying;

·         Knowledge of technical record keeping and file maintenance methods;

·         Knowledge of the principles and practices of field and office engineering activities;

·         Knowledge of public works construction and improvements;

 

Ability:

·         Ability to utilize surveying principles and practices;

·         Ability to maintain high quality work, data integrity, and professionalism with minimal direct supervision.

·         Ability to frequently check and audit own work.

·         Ability to work on one-person or multi-person crews.

·         Ability to complete a wide variety of field survey assignments;

·         Ability to produce accurate surveying and engineering calculations;

·         Ability to utilize CAD/Survey, word processing, spreadsheet, and database systems sufficiently to perform assigned duties;

·         Ability to update and maintain records and files, and produce timely, accurate reports;

·         Ability to work effectively with other employees, other agencies, and the general public;

·         Ability to complete field work safely at sites that may be in various stages of construction, and may require walking on uneven terrain;

·         Ability to schedule work, and provide lead direction for the survey crew as needed;

·         Ability to travel as required.

 

Experience and Training:  Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Completion, or equivalent, of two years of a job-related college program, plus related work experience; typically four years of increasingly responsible experience in surveying. Additional education may be substituted for up to half of the required experience, or any combination of experience, training, and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

                                                               Working Conditions

The principal duties of this classification are performed in a field environment that involves frequent travel by motor vehicle to sites to make perform survey duties.  The position requires walking, climbing and crawling with regular lifting and exertion for short periods.  The incumbent may spend long periods walking or standing; involving exposure to various weather conditions on potentially hazardous survey sites.  Incumbents in this position may encounter situations involving antagonism, anxiety, frustration and deadlines.
