GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Information Services Director, provides the expertise to coordinate, analyze, design, install, configure, and maintain the computer networks for City departments. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

1. Serves as a citywide specialist for network management, configuration, software, licenses management, and security; maintains a network management plan that depicts all departmental configurations in a single area master plan.

2. Performs a network review and maintains a database that displays the current configuration, to include a physical and logical model of services.

3. Completes a written recommendation to suggest the way current networks should be configured; maintains an ongoing level of awareness for the latest developments in technology, and prepares an implementation plan for the suggested changes to network configuration.

4. Coordinates the installation of servers, PCs, physical wiring, and other components; coordinates the diagnosis and repair of hardware problems.

5. Reviews proposals for new networks; changes proposals to include physical and logical models for new networks, and completes an implementation plan.

6. Participates in interagency groups and boards that convene to plan, coordinate, organize, and regulate regional LANs and data integration.

7. Interacts with City employees to facilitate the designing, configuring, and installing of networks and network components.

8. Ensures network security by using design features that are inherent in the network software.

9. Prepares, and maintains a disaster recovery plan for the backup and restoration of both network servers and clients.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of personal computers and PC networks; considerable knowledge of software applications, including network installation methods and procedures; considerable knowledge of network protocols and topographies; knowledge of systems analysis and design techniques, and project management techniques; knowledge of Novell, NT, and Microsoft Workgroups; knowledge of DEC environment and operating systems; knowledge of technical report writing techniques; knowledge of research, analysis, and data gathering methods; ability to learn those aspects of the computer network that are unique to the City; ability to review existing network configurations and make the necessary recommendations; ability to review and analyze proposals for expanded or new networks; ability to manage and implement software metering tools; ability to effectively coordinate the design, installation, repair, and maintenance of the network; ability to train employees in the use of a PC network; ability to convey technical information to persons not directly engaged in data processing activities; ability to write understandable reports; ability to interact harmoniously with employees, other agencies, contractors, and vendors.

Experience and Training

Graduation from a four year college with major coursework in computer science or a related field, formal training from a network provider, and three years of progressively responsible experience in network coordination, analysis, installation, and administration, or any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
