                                                         General Summary of Duties

Under the general supervision of a Library Manager, performs a variety of paraprofessional library support services in the following areas: recommending additions to the Spanish language collection, providing assistance on the reference and circulation desks, providing Library related interpretation and translation services, assisting with the planning and implementation of outreach program services to targeted populations. Performs related duties as required. 

 

 

                                                       Distinguishing Characteristics

The Library Technician 2 Latino Liaison position differs from the Library Technician 2 in that the former uses Spanish as well as English in performing the duties of the position; the position interprets and translates and uses Spanish language skills to support the Library’s Spanish Language Collection and outreach programming.

 

Supervision Received and Exercised:  Receives supervision from Library Manager. 

May provide functional and technical direction to temporary employees and volunteers.

             

 

Essential Job Functions: Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks, which may be found in positions of this class.

·         Provides assistance to Library patrons at the circulation desk to include charging and discharging library materials,  issuing library cards, taking fines and payments, providing information on policies and procedures;

·         Performs reference and readers’ advisory work by assisting patrons in locating and selecting material and responding to reference inquiries;

·         Assists the Library Manager maintain the Library’s Spanish language collection by reviewing Spanish language materials and making recommendations;

·         Prepares bibliographies and book lists; participates in the selection of new library material and the preparation of material for library displays and programs;

·         Acts as a liaison to the Latino Library patrons by providing interpretation at service desks and over the telephone,  translating in-house documents and conducting tours;

·         Assists the Library Manager to provide outreach to the Latino community by helping to identify appropriate cultural and educational programs and in making the programs accessible to the non-English speaking population;

·         Enters data and prepares new books for circulation; maintains records and data to report activities;

·         May order and receive library materials and supplies as directed by the supervisor; provides input for unit budget preparation as required;

·         Participates in the training of new technicians and aides; may provide guidance and direction in new assignments, tasks, and special projects;

·         Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours;

·         Performs other related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

 

 

                                                                    Qualifications

Knowledge of:

·         The practices and techniques used in the processing, circulation, cataloging, and acquisition of library materials;

·         Basic library terminology;

·         Correct English usage, spelling, vocabulary and arithmetic;

·         Basic office methods and equipment, to include filing systems, data processing, and letter composition;

·         Latino culture;

 

Ability to:

·         Work harmoniously with co-workers, patrons, the community and the general public;

·         Be assessed as advanced in written & oral proficiency exams in the Spanish language (highly desired);

·         Communicate effectively both orally and in written form, in both English & Spanish;

·         Type sufficiently to perform the duties of the job;

·         Organize work and complete assigned tasks;

·         Maintain accurate and orderly records;

·         Learn City library operations, procedures, methods, and policies;

·         Operate standard office and library equipment, to include department computers, and the Library automation system;

·         Prepare routine correspondence and reports;

·         Operate computerized bibliographic and circulation databases;

·         Deal tactfully and courteously with the public;

·         Effectively deal with patron issues and conflict situations and relate well to a diverse public;

·         Work evening and/or weekend schedules as required

 

Experience and Training:  Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Training:  Two years course work at an accredited college/university with major course work in business or liberal arts or a related field and

 

Experience:  one year of paraprofessional experience in a library or library environment

 

 

                                                      Required Special Qualifications

·         Ability to speak and write Spanish based on defined proficiency standards

 

 

 

                                                               Working Conditions

The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment. The position is expected to perform required duties, including but not limited to, bending, lifting, standing and manual dexterity.
