GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of a Library Manager, or the lead direction of a Librarian 1, performs varied duties of a paraprofessional nature in the Support Services, the Children and Young Adult Services, or the Adult and Reference Service Divisions. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

1. Charges and discharges books, registers new patrons and maintains the registration file; assists in the "overdue" process and the reserve book program.

2. Prepares bibliographies and book lists; participates in the selection of new Library material and the preparation of material for Library displays and programs.

3. Performs reference and reader's advisory work for patrons and assists them in locating and selecting material; responds to reference inquiries.

4. May conduct group tours and participate in school presentations, story hour, and other children's and community programs; assists in maintaining the young adult collection, the audiovisual collection, and/or the periodical and pamphlet collections.

5. Enters data and prepares new books for circulation; maintains records and data to report activities.

6. May order and receive Library materials and supplies as directed by the Supervisor; provides input for unit budget preparation as required.

7. Participates in the training of new technicians and aides; may provide guidance and direction in new assignments, tasks, and special projects.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the practices and techniques used in the processing, circulation, cataloging, and acquisition of library materials; knowledge of basic library terminology; knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, vocabulary and arithmetic; knowledge of basic office methods and equipment, to include filing systems, data processing, and letter composition; ability to work harmoniously with co-workers, elected officials patrons, the community and the general public; ability to type sufficiently to perform the duties of the job;
ability to organize work and complete assigned tasks; ability to maintain accurate and orderly records; ability to learn City Library operations, procedures, methods, and policies; ability to operate standard office and library equipment, to include personal computers, and minicomputer terminals; ability to prepare routine correspondence and reports.

Experience and Training

Two years in an accredited college/university and one year of experience in an office or library environment, or any combination of experience training, and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
