GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of a Library Manager, performs varied duties of a professional librarian in the Support Services, the Youth Services, or the Adult and Reference Service Divisions. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

1. Provides reference, reader's advisory, and general patron assistance on public service desk, by using knowledge of standard library organizational methods, books, computerized data bases, and basic reference interviewing techniques.

2. Participates in, and supports the development of the assigned Division by helping to plan and implements goals for the Division, preparing and coordinating portions of the Division budget, participating in committee and staff meetings, and promoting activities of the Division; may represent the Library at programs, such as Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation, and other community functions.

3. Prepares bibliographies, booklists, and program guides, and participates in the selection and cataloging of new library material.

4. Organizes and maintains the book and non-book collections of the assigned Division, by ordering, collecting, and organizing books, audio-visual materials, magazines, and other materials on a specific subject or field; maintains collections by utilizing professional publications and electronic resources, and standard collection development techniques.

5. Oversees and maintains the Library's bibliographic database and authority files; edits cataloging extracted from standard sources, and performs original cataloging and classification when necessary.

6. Represents the Division by developing and leading story hours and other children's programs, completing book reviews, contacting the schools or other community agencies, or by serving on committees that promote the interest of the library or division.

7. May assign, and informally review, the work of Library Technicians, Library Aides, and volunteers; participates in the training and orientation of new employees and volunteers.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work; considerable knowledge of cataloging, classifying and processing library materials; knowledge of library operations, methods, and policies; knowledge of collection organizing techniques; ability to prepare and monitor budgets and other statistical reports; ability to utilize computer database systems sufficiently to perform assigned duties; ability to communicate effectively with others in written, electronic, and oral formats; ability to interact harmoniously with co-workers and the public; ability to provide technical and functional supervision for other staff members and volunteers.

Experience and Training

Completion, or equivalent, of a job-related four year college degree, plus related work experience, typically one year of professional library experience. A Master's Degree in Library Science may be substituted for the year of professional library experience, or any combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
